The Ups And Downs Of A Teenage Brain

One thing is for sure about teenagers things change inside and out. Including the brain and IQ. IQ or intelligence quotient, measures a person’s ability to think and reason. It may fall or rise and parts of the brain might change during the teenage years. Many scientists believed that it never changes which means a persons IQ will stay the same for their whole life. A new study shows that that is not true, a persons IQ can change. In 2004 scientists made an experiment using 33 teens from 12 to 16 years old. The scientists also took pictures of their brains with MRI.

In 2007 the teens returned to the lab. Like the first time the scientists tested them and saw they have different IQ's. They looked at the pictures of the brains and saw that there was more gray matter in them. They had more gray matter in a part called the left motor cortex which is involved with speaking. Scientists found other connections between increased IQ scores and gray matter, which is a tissue containing brain cells. Not even scientsts know why the IQ is changing so much in the teenage years.

My Opinion
I think this is good because if you didn't have a good IQ you could still change it. I think this will be good for teachers whose students are changing rapidly. I hope researchers dont give up and find out why its changing so much in the teen years.

  1. This is very interesting Nemanja. I think it is great that we can change our IQ. :) Studying and reading helps! In your next current event, I want you to try to refine your summary even further by choosing seven main points from the article and writing more in your own words. You did well on this one, but you can still improve. Good reflection too, I do think it is good for teachers to know. :)
